The Technology Transfer Office (TTO) is responsible for the identification, protection, marketing and licensing of intellectual property (e.g., patents, unique biological or other materials, and copyrights) developed by WSU faculty. In addition, TTO reviews and negotiates material transfer, non-disclosure and sponsored research agreements when they relate directly to WSU inventions. The goal of TTO is to effectively manage and constantly improve technology transfer services at Wayne State University to provide the highest possible level and quality of assistance to all WSU researchers and our industry partners thereby maximizing the availability of new technology to society. TTO handles all aspects of the invention development process including the encouragement, assessment, protection and licensing of inventions; the post-licensing oversight of agreement compliance; distribution of royalties and fees; and record keeping for all aspects of WSU intellectual property technology transfer.

- About 30 percent of all practicing physicians in Michigan received all or part of their medical training at WSU. Forty-three percent of all practicing physicians in the Detroit tri-county area received all or part of their medical training at Wayne State.
Competing Nationally in Research
- With $200 million in annual research expenditures, Wayne State ranks in the top 50 nationally among public universities, according to the National Science Foundation.
- The Karmanos Cancer Institute in 2005 won a $13.9 million grant and renewal of its national designation by the National Cancer Institute in recognition for outstanding cancer research and care. The grant will support research at the institute and recognizes Karmanos as a site of scientific excellence.
- Six School of Medicine researchers received more than $5.3 million in the 2005 round of funding from the Michigan Technology Tri-Corridor, which fosters growth in technologies.
- Two researchers from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences received two other grants totaling more than $1.5 million. WSU won more grant funding than any other Michigan research university in the competition.
- The university is committed to research partnerships and transferring technology to the marketplace: Royalties for Wayne State's intellectual property have climbed more than 300 percent to more than $2.5 million since 2000.
